A GRANDER DESIGN

Vauxhall's Grandland mid-sized SUV gets an extra dose of appeal. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.

Ten Second Review

Vauxhall's Grandland remains an affordable, well equipped mid-sized SUV and has lately gained a frugal 48v hybrid engine option. It's still one of the more affordable choices in the Qashqai segment and offers a sharp look and a modern cabin.

Background

When the original version of this car, badged the 'Grandland X' was launched in 2017, it was quite a late entrant to the mid-sized SUV segment. Or that's what you might think anyway. Actually, Vauxhall competed half-heartedly in this sector for nearly a decade between 2006 and 2015 with its Korean-built Antara, which replaced the Luton-built Frontera model launched way back in 1991. Neither of these crossovers really hit the segment sweet spot though and neither was helped by brittle build quality that could charitably be described as 'patchy'. By the middle of this century's second decade though, Vauxhall had got on board with the kind of SUV modern family buyers really wanted, launching its supermini-based Mokka model in 2012 and shortly afterwards, entering into an agreement with Peugeot to share the engineering of two further contenders in this class, the original Grandland X model being one of them. Four years on in 2021, it shed the 'X' part of its badge and gained a smarter look both inside and out. And more recently, Vauxhall has introduced 48V hybrid technology to the range, creating the car we're going to look at here.

Driving Experience

Engine-wise, the main news for Grandland customers in recent times is the addition of a 48V hybrid powertrain. It's based around the brand's familiar 1.2-litre petrol engine but here pairs it with a six-speed dual-clutch auto transmission and a 0.89kWh lithium-ion battery, which is recharged automatically under certain conditions. A permanent magnet synchronous electric motor is integrated into the gearbox and produces peak power of 28hp and maximum torque of 55Nm. Total power output in 136PS. If you can't quite stretch to that, then Vauxhall continues to offer the 1.2-litre petrol engine in more conventional unelectrified form with 130PS and the choice of either manual or auto transmission. In manual form, it makes 10.4s en route to 122mph. The alternative is a 1.5-litre diesel, also with 130PS but only available in auto form; that manages 62mph in 12.3s en route to 119mph. At the top of the range, there's still a Plug-in Hybrid model which is front-driven in mainstream form. This PHEV variant uses a 1.6-litre petrol engine, but there's just one electric motor mated to it in 2WD guise, so the combined power output is 225PS. That gets you to 60mph in 8.9s and the top speed is 140mph (or 84mph in all-electric drive, which lasts for up to 34 miles between battery charges). A twin motor AWD 300PS Grandland GSe variant is also available, which gets to 62mph in just 6.1s. As for drive dynamics across the Grandland range, well we'd anticipate that your expectations of a car of this kind when it comes to handling will probably be pretty modest. You'll want quite a commanding driving position, a comfortable ride, reasonable refinement, decently responsive engines and, well, that's likely to be about it. If you're after a C-segment SUV that you can throw around a bit, then this one certainly won't suit. Take a more typically relaxed approach though and everything becomes much more satisfactory. It soaks up bumps and tarmac tears that would trouble many rivals. Plus it's relatively quiet and easy to manoeuvre, particularly around town where the light steering that hampers you at speed becomes a boon.

Design and Build

Like other recent Vauxhalls, this Grandland features the brand's 'Vizor' trim detailing on the front end which sees Vauxhall's Griffin logo proudly positioned in the centre of the grille, flanked by slim LED headlamps and muscular bumpers. The dimensions (nearly 4.5m of length, nearly 1.9m of width and nearly 1.65m of height) position this Grandland just above smaller mid-sized SUVs (like the Qashqai and the Ateca) and just below larger mid-sized models (like the Ford Kuga and the Volkswagen Tiguan). Avoid entry-trim and you get a contrast-coloured roof too. Inside, there's Vauxhall's usual Pure Panel cockpit with two widescreen displays for a very 'digital' experience. Ahead of the driver is a display of 12-inches in size, offering up essential information, while the central 10-inch display controls all infotainment via a touchscreen.  Driver and passengers benefit from the elevated seating position typical of an SUV, which ensures good visibility in all situations. And this model's relatively long wheelbase provides decent space for up to five people, while the luggage compartment on conventionally-engined models (with a load volume from 514-litres to a maximum of 1,652 litres) should offer more than adequate room for luggage. Boot capacity falls to 390-litres with the Plug-in Hybrid versions.

Market and Model

There's a now-simplified choice of three trim levels - 'Design', 'GS Line' and 'Ultimate', with a GSe PHEV at the top of the range. So, let's get to the pricing, which is pitched in the £30,000 to £38,000 bracket for mainstream-engined models - pretty much what you'd expect these days for a family-sized Qashqai-class compact Crossover with cutting-edge design. The 48V hybrid version costs from around £32,500. Obviously, you'll pay a bit more for the PHEV variant, which costs from around £41,000 and in 2WD form is only offered with 'GS Line' or 'Ultimate' trim. The top 'GSe' PHEV AWD model costs around £46,000. 'Design' models have a high level of specification as standard including 17-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch colour touchscreen, 'Apple CarPlay'/'Android Auto' smartphone connectivity and dual-zone electronic climate control. There's also a raft of safety technology including lane departure warning, speed sign recognition, lane assist and automatic emergency braking. The sportier 'GS Line' package features a black roof, door mirrors and wheel arches combined with 18-inch Gloss Black alloy wheels, dark tinted rear windows and alloy-effect skid plates. It also features LED headlights, tail lights and daytime running lights. Inside, there's Vauxhall's Pure Panel cockpit with twin screens including a 10-inch colour touchscreen and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster. Along with a Multimedia Navi Pro satellite navigation system and an AGR-approved driver's active sports-style seat for added comfort. Top 'Ultimate' trim adds 19-inch multi-spoke 'Ironman' alloy wheels, IntelliLux LED Pixel HeadLights and body-colour for the front bumper, rear bumper, wheel arches, door claddings and skid plates. Inside, there's Alcantara upholstery with heated front seats and steering wheel. Safety technology includes Side Blind Spot assist, Highway Integration Assist and Lane Positioning Assist.

Cost of Ownership

Interestingly, Vauxhall is refusing to drop a diesel engine from the range, but black pump-fuelled Grandland sales will be quite rare. Even though the 130PS 1.5-litre diesel variant in question manages up to 54.3mpg on the WLTP combined cycle and up to 136g/km of WLTP-rated CO2. Most customers will choose the 130PS 1.2-litre three cylinder petrol model, which in manual form manages up to 45.6mpg and 140g/km - or up to 44.1mpg and 144g/km as an automatic. The alternative 48V hybrid petrol model improves that to 51.3mpg and 124g/km. The PHEV Hybrid 2WD model of course, does a lot better - 192mpg on the combined cycle and 31g/km. Plus it can go 34 miles between charges that will take three and a half hours with the standard Mode 3 cable. You can reduce that to an hour and 45 minutes if you pay extra for your car to be equipped with the optional on-board charger. The top Grandland GSe PHEV AWD model manages up to 217.3mpg and 29g/km of CO2. You'll also need to know that Vauxhall includes a three-year, 60,000 mile warranty as standard, a package that can be extended up to five years and 100,000 miles at extra cost. A year's free breakdown cover is also provided, along with a six-year anti-corrosion guarantee. Plus you can opt for a service plan that lets you pay monthly to spread the cost of regular work to your car. As part of this, Vauxhall offers discounts on wear and tear items, such as brake pads and windscreen wipers.

Summary

Vauxhall hasn't bought us anything particularly new or innovative here, but it has now given itself a fighting chance of getting an important slice of sales in this vitally important fast-growing market segment. The Grandland is comfortable, good-looking, well-equipped and practical, all attributes that will endear it to likely showroom browsers. Don't expect it to be particularly dynamically rewarding; few SUVs are. You can though, have much higher expectations when it comes to ride and refinement. In short, if you want an SUV in this class, there's no real reason why you shouldn't consider this one. And that, for Vauxhall, is a big step forward.
