Leasing an electric car - which is best?

With growing numbers of us looking at leasing an electric car, which is the best make and model to consider?

This will become an increasingly important question because the government has revealed that from 2030, the sale of petrol and diesel cars will be banned.

This means drivers will need to switch to all-electric cars and vans by that date - and hybrid alternatives will only be sold until 2035.

There are still issues over the range of the battery-powered cars, but these are improving regularly.

Tesla Model 3 car lease

For example, the popular Tesla Model 3 car lease offers zero emissions and a range of 348 miles.

Other cars have lower ranges but leasing an electric car means you can get to enjoy new technology and when your agreement comes to an end, you simply hand your EV back to the leasing company.

After that point, you can either buy an electric or hybrid car, or take out another electric car lease.

Leasing an electric car also means you will enjoy lower motoring costs because EV's are about half the price to run per mile than diesel and petrol cars are.

Electric car leasing costs

And if you sign up for a cheap off-peak deal for your electricity supply, you can reduce your electric car leasing costs even further.

The low bills also include cheaper servicing because there are fewer moving parts and reliability is improved.

Here, the Tilsun Leasing team look at the options for leasing and electric car, from small cars to family offerings.

Lease the Nissan Leaf

The contract hire Nissan Leaf is an electric car that has been a popular choice for several years now.

The latest version in 2021 unveiled more equipment and better handling, plus a longer range.

Leasing the Nissan Leaf is cheaper than many rivals, and there's also the firm's innovative e-Pedal which is easy-to-use as drivers get used to driving with just one pedal.

Of the models, there's a choice of a 40kWh battery offering a range of 168 miles, or a 62kWh battery delivering 239 miles.

This battery is also mated to an electric motor producing 214 bhp to make this an ideal family car leasing choice.

Lease the BMW i4

It's cheaper to lease than a Tesla Model 3, and the BMW i3 electric car lease is a great creation.

It offers driving agility and a choice of motors producing either 335 bhp, or 544 bhp.

This is a Gran Coupe and a stylish car that will attract attention.

The interior is a comfortable and futuristic offering that offers a quiet and refined place to spend time.

The eDrive40 delivers a rapid acceleration of 5.7 seconds, though the M 50 will do this in just 3.9 seconds.

The i4 offers a range of 367 miles in a luxurious, well designed car to meet most needs.

Lease the Volkswagen ID.3

The Volkswagen ID.3 is the carmaker's first foray into an all-electric model and it's great.

It's stylish and futuristic and has been designed from the ground up to be an impressive battery-powered offering.

Drivers get an official range of 340 miles from the 77kWh battery producing 204 PS.

And there are few physical controls onboard with VW installing two digital screens as a cockpit and infotainment centre.

There's a lot to like about leasing the VW ID.3 and it's one of the better offerings currently available.

A refresh of the contract hire ID.3 range in 2021 delivered configurable trims and more options.

Lease the Jaguar I-Pace

One of the most impressive all-electric cars currently available is the excellent Jaguar I-Pace SUV.

It's the firm's first battery-powered offering and sets a benchmark for the entire sector for how electric cars should handle.

It's not only a stylish and well-made offering, but it's also one of the best premium SUVs to lease.

The contract hire Jaguar I-Pace offers a range of 292 miles with the all-wheel drive SUV having two motors delivering 396 bhp.

The 0 to 62 mph sprint time is 4.8 seconds but when driven, the car is a revelation, particularly on winding country roads.

Despite the high price tag, the I-Pace offers low running costs with a 0% Benefit-in-Kind tax liability for company car drivers.

It's also a very safe car with Euro NCAP awarding it five stars for crash testing.

This is a fun, practical as well as fast and luxurious electric car to lease with the Jaguar I-Pace delivering a real driver’s car to enjoy.
